Pioneers Australia

Pioneers Australia partners with the church to send and support missionaries who are taking the gospel to people who have little or no access to it. We focus on cross-cultural mission, working among unreached people groups where Christ is not yet known. Through church planting, discipleship, and holistic ministry, we seek to see lives transformed by the power of the gospel. Learn more about Pioneers Australia.

History

Pioneers Australia is committed to reaching the unreached—people groups with little or no access to the gospel. We are known for:
  • Passion for the unreached – We prioritise places where Christ is not yet known.
  • Team-based approach – We believe in working alongside others in cross-cultural teams for encouragement, accountability, and effectiveness.
  • Flexibility in ministry – We empower missionaries to use their unique gifts in church planting, discipleship, medical work, business as mission, and more.
  • Faith-driven support – Our workers are not salaried but rely on God’s provision through the generosity of churches and individuals.
If you're exploring mission, we'd love to help you find where you fit in God’s global plan.

Am I Called?

Discerning God’s call to mission is a journey of prayer, seeking wisdom, and taking steps of faith. If you’re sensing a burden for the lost or a desire to see people come to know Jesus in places where He is not yet known, that could be part of God’s leading. We encourage you to:

  • Pray – Ask God to make His direction clear.
  • Seek counsel – Talk with trusted Christian leaders, mentors, and missionaries.
  • Take a step – Join a short-term mission trip, explore cross-cultural ministry, or connect with us for guidance.

If you’re exploring long-term mission, we’d love to walk with you in that journey. Get in touch to start the conversation.

Speak with a Mission Mentor

It’s a common feeling! The truth is, God doesn’t just call the equipped—He equips the called. You don’t need to have it all figured out before stepping into mission. Pioneers is here to walk alongside you, providing training, mentoring, and resources to help you grow in your faith and skills. Whether you’re a recent graduate, a professional looking for a change, or someone sensing God’s call later in life, we’ll work with you and your church to explore how your gifts and passions can be used to share Jesus with the unreached.

Yes! Families can—and do—serve in missions, and children of all ages can thrive in a cross-cultural setting with the right support. Whether you have small children, teenagers, or a mix of ages, God can use your whole family in His mission.

Of course, there are important factors to consider. Education is a significant one, and families often explore options such as homeschooling, international schools, online learning, or local schooling. Each choice has implications for your mission location and lifestyle, and Pioneers helps families navigate these decisions with wisdom and prayer.

Children’s well-being is another key concern. While mission life brings transitions and challenges, many missionary kids grow up to be resilient, adaptable, and deeply rooted in their faith. With intentional support—emotionally, socially, and spiritually—children can flourish in a cross-cultural setting.

At Pioneers, we recognise that serving as a family requires extra support. That’s why, within our Member Care team, we have a dedicated Families Support person who walks alongside families, helping them navigate the unique joys and challenges of cross-cultural ministry. This role ensures that both parents and children have the guidance, encouragement, and resources they need to stay well and thrive in their calling.

Serving with a family may require extra planning, but it also brings unique opportunities for ministry. Kids and teens often build bridges into local communities in ways that adults cannot. If God is calling your family to the nations, He will also provide the grace, resources, and support to make it possible. Pioneers is here to walk that journey with you.

Mission is a shared responsibility. Even if you’re not called to go, you can be an essential part of the work by:
  • Praying – Commit to interceding for missionaries, unreached people groups, and the spread of the gospel. Check out our prayer resources to get started.
  • Giving – Many missionaries rely on the faithful financial support of churches and individuals. Consider partnering financially to enable gospel workers to stay on the field.
  • Encouraging – Missionaries face challenges and isolation. Sending a message, writing a letter, or offering practical support can be a huge blessing.
  • Mobilising – Inspire others to consider mission, share opportunities in your church, or join a sending team.

Mission happens when the whole body of Christ works together. How is God inviting you to be part of His global mission?

Whether joining an existing team or pioneering a new initiative, we encourage you to seek where God is leading you. Where is He calling you to make a difference?

Your journey is unique, and so is your preparation. Consider these questions:
  • What mission work are you passionate about?
  • What experiences have shaped you?
  • How has God uniquely designed you?
  • What skills and gifts do you bring?
  • Is your biblical foundation strong?
  • Can you effectively share the gospel across cultures?
  • Does your church affirm your calling?
We'll collaborate with you to create a personalised preparation plan, which may include language acquisition, theological training, and cultural studies, ensuring you're equipped to thrive in your ministry.

Preparation timelines vary based on individual circumstances. It could be a matter of months or extend over a few years. Our shared goal is thorough preparation to ensure effective service. Many find themselves ready to serve overseas within a year or so of joining Pioneers.

Every missionary journey is unique, but preparation is key. While formal theological training is not essential in every case, we firmly believe you need:

  • Biblical and theological understanding – A solid grasp of Scripture and sound doctrine is essential.
  • Cross-cultural training – Learning about cultural adaptation, language acquisition, and effective ministry approaches is invaluable.
  • Personal readiness – Mission work requires resilience, humility, and a teachable spirit.

Pioneers provides mentorship, training, and support, ensuring you are spiritually, emotionally, and practically equipped for cross-cultural ministry. If God is calling you, don’t let a lack of qualifications hold you back—let’s talk about next steps.

Your church is integral to your mission journey. Here's how we foster this partnership:
  • Initial Discernment: Share your mission aspirations with your church leaders and seek their prayers.
  • Pre-Application Meeting: Our team connects with your pastor or mission advocate to align visions.
  • Ongoing Relationship: Maintain strong ties with your church before departure, during your service, and upon returning, ensuring continuous support and connection.

Absolutely! God can use your unique talents and passions to reach others. Whether you're a teacher, engineer, artist, or entrepreneur, your skills can make a meaningful impact in the mission field. You get to be yourself, living and serving and sharing life through the gifts and skills that make you who you are. All over the world, every day, followers of Jesus are using creative ways to do ‘life on life’ with people who don’t yet know him.

Yes, trusting God for provision is a step of faith. Most of our members develop a team of financial partners before departing. Some may also engage in employment or income-generating activities abroad to support their ministry.

Living costs differ worldwide. Leveraging the experiences of our global workers, we'll assist you in crafting a budget tailored to your destination and personal needs.

On the Field

Our commitment ranges from two years to a lifetime. We're dedicated to making disciples of Jesus Christ, which involves long-term engagement, language learning, cultural adaptation, and serving communities. Our aim is to share the good news of Jesus with those who haven't heard and to strengthen local churches.

While our focus is on long-term disciple-making, short-term mission experiences can be a valuable way to explore cross-cultural ministry. Whether it’s a vision trip (to visit and learn) or a short-term placement (to serve alongside an existing team for a few months), these opportunities can help you discern God’s calling and gain practical experience. If you’re considering short-term mission, we encourage you to think beyond just a ‘trip’—how could this be a step towards deeper, long-term impact?

Pioneers is committed to the principle of body life, or team. Our teams are diverse, united by a common purpose. They consist of individuals from various backgrounds and skill sets, working collaboratively to share the gospel and serve communities. Each team is unique, reflecting the needs of the people they serve and the gifts of its members.
