This is a Tax Deductible OARF project ‘Water is life’ is a common saying in East Africa. In a hospital setting, a safe and reliable water supply is essential to providing sanitation and hygiene, together with infection prevention and control. This project involves the refurbishment of the water system at Kuluva Hospital, Uganda, including for the nursing school and primary school. The existing water supply system has fallen into a state of disrepair, and there has never been a water treatment system. The project will utilise the existing functional infrastructure and incorporate improvements including the addition of a new water tank, new water pumps and repair or replacement of the existing distribution pipe work. In addition, it will add an automated chlorine injector to treat water supplied to the hospital. Impact: Patients, attendants, staff and students currently rely on rainwater collection and collection of water in jerry cans from a hand-pumped well or protected stream. As an outcome of this project, piped water will be available at the point of use, eliminating the need to collect and carry water. The ready availability of water, together with chlorination, are expected to improve sanitation and hygiene and help to reduce and prevent infection. Invitation: Be a part of this vital project!
