Lamp of Sumbi – South East Asia

This is a Tax Deductible OARF project

The LAMP of SUMBI Project brings the joy of reading to communities where books are scarce but the desire to learn is strong. By partnering with dedicated teachers in village kindergartens and schools in South East Asia, the project establishes reading posts that provide children with regular access to engaging, age-appropriate books. With 11 active reading posts already in place—and fresh sets of books delivered every one to three months— LAMP of SUMBI ensures young learners always have something new to explore, imagine, and discover.

Many teachers work tirelessly to teach their students to read but lack the necessary books to make this possible. LAMP of SUMBI bridges this gap by lending high-quality resources and running literacy-building programs like our Storytelling initiative, which nurtures a lifelong love of reading. Support from sponsors keeps these reading posts thriving and growing, empowering teachers, inspiring children, and lighting the path toward stronger, more vibrant futures.

Impact: The LAMP of SUMBI reading posts and Story Time program are transforming early literacy by providing teachers and families with books they previously lacked access to. With engaging storybooks in hand, children develop a love of reading, expand their vocabulary and imagination, and are participating more actively in class. Teachers can deliver richer lessons, parents can support learning at home, and even non-readers begin retelling stories through pictures. Schools report calmer classrooms, stronger literacy sessions, and children choosing books over gadgets. LAMP of SUMBI is helping build a joyful reading culture that strengthens students, teachers, and families alike.

Invitation: Join us in putting real books into children’s hands and helping light the path to lifelong learning.
