Uganda

What and Why... by Sharon

Car-(1).jpgI find great joy in ministering with Pioneers and Youth With A Mission to disadvantaged youth in Arua, in the northwest corner of Uganda. We run a vocational training school for youth who have had their education cut short due to extreme poverty, HIV/AIDS, and/or violence. Many have not completed secondary schooling, and have no opportunity to go on to tertiary studies.

So far, we have had classes in baking, catering, tailoring, basic mechanics, advanced mechanics, and driving. As well as teaching these basic skills, we have Bible studies, lessons on hygiene and life skills, and have fun together. It is exciting to work with these young people and to see them master their new skills, grow in confidence and find hope for their future. We desire to see these underprivileged youths empowered, transformed, healed and equipped to reach their full potential... and to transform their communities.

Graduations are always an important event for theAround-the-car-(1).jpg students; they invite family and friends to come and see them receive their certificates. For many of these students, this is the only graduation they will ever have. One student testified, “I’m now cooking and selling doughnuts from home and making some money... I’m so proud of myself!” Another testified, “Now I have something to sustain my life with, and just last week I was able to use these simple skills to help someone else... I now value myself!” A grandparent affirmed, “My grandson was on the streets, rejected by his father, and mixing with a bad crowd. Since taking this training, he now has a focus in life and is doing great... his life has changed. When is the next class?” Some of our graduates are now employed in a local bakery, in a restaurant, in a kitchen and one has started his own small business.

We hope to add to the range of classes we offer, so as to reach more youth in our surrounding villages. Praise God!
