The Good Fight: Framed for Murder

Sometimes in an attempt to bring down a fruitful ministry, the enemy will play dirty.  “But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 15:57

It was deliberate, it was planned, and it was evil.  A woman was missing and her husband was pointing the finger straight at Az.  He told the police that Az was working for a Christian organisation, and that his wife had been talking to them about changing faith.  Now his wife had disappeared and he believed that Az had killed her.

Az is the project director for a well-established organisation in South Asia ministering to disadvantaged people including children in poverty, widows without hope, and people with disabilities. The positive impact of these ministries in people’s lives is immeasurable. Pioneers partners with this organisation, and one of our members has an ongoing mentorship role with Az and the other local team members.
Now Az was suspected of murder.  He was questioned, followed, and his phone calls tapped.  The rest of the team could only contact him via his next door neighbour to give encouragement and advice, a Christian man but not on friendly terms with Az. The team shut down the ministry to minimise any basis for further accusations.

Things got worse.  The missing woman’s husband also disappeared, leaving Az a suspect for two murders.  The team prayed and did all they could, providing letters verifying his character, and seeking justice within the difficult system there.  They feared for Az, but also that their whole organisation would be permanently shut down. What was God doing all this time?  He was pouring out grace, but also holding back his hand, waiting for His perfect timing to show His authority to Az, the team, and many others watching the case.
The woman’s body was found, providing the opportunity to collect forensic evidence.  Suspicion was extended to include her husband, but Az was still the only suspect “in hand”.  It was time for God to make his move.  The husband was spotted by police at the airport as he was about to flee the country.  He was arrested and charged with the murder of his wife, and Az was completely cleared. Truth and justice prevailed!

There is more to this story.  What Satan had planned for evil, the Lord has turned into something wonderful.
The team began the ministries again, and not long ago they gathered for a planning meeting.  As they each shared what they were thankful for, many of their praise points were things that God had taught them through the time that Az was under accusation.  Relationships had been restored, ministry focus was sharpened.  Best of all, Az’s son came to faith in Jesus and was baptised, having seen close up God’s faithfulness to his father.  Even the neighbour, who had passed on the messages, has now become a close friend to Az, and they pray together each week.

There is no strategy of the enemy that catches God off guard. He continues to amaze us by “causing everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.” Romans 8:28
